Academia Industry Linkage | PIBF on Pakistan’s Youth Skills Gap

Academia Industry Linkage is essential to addressing Pakistan’s growing gap between education and employment. Stronger collaboration between universities, technical institutes and businesses can help young people develop practical skills, improve employability and contribute to economic growth.

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), citing World Bank estimates, Pakistan loses approximately $31.5 billion annually due to skills shortages, lost productivity and unrealized export potential. Only 7% of young people have access to formal technical and vocational training, compared with a regional average of 22%

Pakistan’s Youth Employment Challenge

Pakistan’s education system continues to face challenges in connecting graduates with the skills employers need. According to the World Economic Forum’s October 2026 article, citing Gallup Pakistan’s analysis of the Labour Force Survey 2024–25, unemployment among graduates aged 20–24 stands at 32.8%

Limited industry exposure, inadequate career guidance, and a lack of structured mentorship can make the transition from education to employment more difficult for young people.

PIBF’s Perspective: Connecting Education with Industry

The Pak International Business Forum (PIBF) believes that stronger Academia Industry Linkage is an important step towards addressing these challenges.

Universities, technical institutes and the business community can work together to:

  • Develop market-relevant skills: Align educational programmes with changing industry requirements.
  • Expand internships and apprenticeships: Give students practical workplace experience before graduation.
  • Strengthen mentorship: Connect students with experienced entrepreneurs and industry professionals.
  • Improve career guidance: Help young people understand employment trends and emerging opportunities.
  • Support entrepreneurship: Encourage innovation, business development and self-employment.

Building a Skilled Workforce for Pakistan

A stronger connection between education and industry can help businesses access relevant talent while enabling young Pakistanis to prepare for changing workplace demands, including the growing impact of artificial intelligence.

PIBF encourages greater cooperation between educational institutions and the business community to promote skills development, employment opportunities and sustainable economic growth.
